Club History

Torphin Hill Golf Club was established in 1895 but did not move to the present site until 1903.

The Clubs origins came about mainly by the amalgamation of several Edinburgh printing firms playing for the Edinburgh Federation Shield team trophy which is still played for today.

The Club takes its name from the original suburb of Torphin, which, according to legend comes from the Gaelic Torrfionn meaning White Torr.

Set in the foothills of the Pentland Hills the course is 18 hole parkland with 14 of the 18 holes set on a relatively flat plateau.

With the 15th tee being eight feet higher than Edinburghs famous extinct volcano, Arthurs Seat, the panorama of the city combined with the breathtaking views north across the Firth of Forth to Fife, Grangemouth to the west and the Bass Rock at North Berwick to the east, playing golf can become secondary to visitors.

There have been many changes to the course since its conception but the clubhouse, which was originally a family home, has retained its natural warmth for both members and visitors alike.

Apart from the main membership the Club operates with sections for Ladies, Seniors and Juniors with regular competitions each month of the year.

The Club is a member of the prestigious 1895 Club that can boast 36 other member clubs throughout the UK who were also established in 1895 with whom reciprocal tee times can be arranged.

Although we are proud of our history we do have a forward thinking idiom and encourage our Juniors to participate in free coaching weeks during the Easter and Summer school holidays.
